Experiment
Object:
To perform the assay of Chlorpromazine hydrochloride.
Structure:
Properties:
Molecular Formula: C17H19CIN2S, HCI
Mol. Wt.: 355.3
Chlorpromazine hydrochloride contains not less than 99.0 per cent and not more than
101.0 percent of C17H19CINZS, HCI, calculated on dried basis.
Category:
Antipsychotic, antiemetic.
Theory:
Dose: As antipsychotic, orally, 75 to 300 mg daily, in divided doses; by intramuscular
injection, 25 to 50 mg. As antiemetic, orally, 10 to 25 mg every 4 to 6 hours; by deep
intramuscular injection, 25 mg initially followed by 25 mg-50 mg every 3 to 4 hours until necessary.
Description:
A white or creamy-white, crystalline powder, odourless. It decomposes on exposure to air and light becoming yellow, pink and finally violet.
Assay:
- Weigh accurately about 0.6 g, dissolve in 200 ml of acetone and add 15 ml of mercuric acetate solution.
- Titrate with 0.1 M perchloric acid, using a saturated solution of methyl orange in acetone as an indicator.
- Carry out a blank titration.
Factor:
1 ml of 0.1 M perchloric acid is equivalent to 0.03553 g of C17H19CIN2S, HCI.
Storage: Store protected from light and moisture.
