Experiment
Object:
To perform the assay of Furosemide.
Chemical Structure:
Chemical Name:
4-chloro-N-furfuryl-5-sulphamoyl anthranilic acid
Molecular Formula: C12H11CIN2OS
Mol. Wt.: 330.7
Furosemide contains not less than 98.5 per cent and not more than 101.0 per cent of
C12H11CIN2O2S, calculated on dried basis.
Theory:
Category: Diuretic.
Description: A white or almost white, crystalline powder.
Loss on drying: Not more than 0.5 per cent, determined on 1.0 g by drying in an oven at
105°C.
Dose:
Orally, in oedema, 20 to 40 mg daily, in oliguvria, 250 mg 4 to 6 times daily;
by intramuscular or slow intravenous injection, 20 to 50 mg (rate not exceeding 4 mg per
minute).
Assay:
- Weigh accurately about 0.5 g, dissolve in 40 ml of dimethyl formamide.
- Titrate with 0.1 M sodium hydroxide using bromothymol blue solution as an indicator.
- Carry out a blank titration.
Factor:
1 ml of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 0.03307 g of C12H11CIN2O5S.
Storage: Store protected from light.
Uses:
It is used as diuretic.
It's used to treat high blood pressure, and heart failure and oedema (a build up of fluid in the body).
