Object:

To perform the Assay of Aspirin as per IP 2014.

Requirements:

Aspirin, ethanol, NaOH, breaker, funnel, glassrod, burette,conical flask, burrete stand etc.

Theory:

Aspirin is also known as acetylsalicylic acid and Aspirin is a medication used to reduce pain,fever, or inflammation. Aspirin an acetyl derivative of salicylic acid is white crystalline.

Procedure:


Weight accurately about 1.5gm dissolve in 15ml of ethanol (95%) add 50M NaOH boil gently for 10min cool and titrate with 0.5M HCl using Phenol Red as indicator.
Repeat the operation without the substance under examination. The difference between the titration represent the amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) required.

Observation:

Draw observation table of 3 titration reading.

Calculation:

Calculate Avg. Reading (X)= R1+R2+R3/3
And Balnk Reading (Y)___ml

Then calculate Z= Y-X
Equivalent factor = Z×0.04504

Result :

The assay of aspirin was performed and the value was found to be_____.
